White noise can be really good for creating a good sleeping environment for your little one, but you do need to use it correctly for it to be helpful. To use white noise successfully, it needs to be playing constantly throughout the night, so no gaps in the noise and the same noise all night long. Put it on before you say good night to your little one and leave it on until it’s time to get up in the morning (this is really important).
You can star using this at any age and it’s a good idea to get your little one used to using white noise gradually, so the first time you use it put it on quietly and leave it on at that level all night. The second night, turn it up a little bit more and keep doing this each night until you reach the level that you’d like it to be. To gauge how loud it should be think about how loud your shower is, it’s a good indicator of how loud the white noise should go. (If you ever want to stop using the white noise just do this in reverse, turning it down gradually every few nights until you can’t hear it anymore).
There are couple of ways of playing white noise, you can get white noise machines but make sure they’re the type that will stay on all night. If you have an old phone or tablet that you don’t use anymore you can play white noise through an app, I like the sound sleeper app with rain noise. What we’re going for is a consistent sound, heartbeats and ocean waves tend to have gaps of quiet in between the noise so they’re not helpful for covering outside sounds. Use it every night to keep your little cherubs sleep environment consistent.
